My grandparents lived through the Keen Depression. Even when they were elderly, they still lived the unofficial slogan of that time period: "Consume it upward, wear it out, go far do, or practice without." I am far from living that slogan, but I do endeavor. I really hate to go rid of things that I know are all the same skilful. (Hence, my pack rat problem.)
This winter, I bought ii of the cutest dresses for my daughter. Ordinarily, this way of dress is shorter than we similar, just since the dresses were from the teen section and my kiddo was between the kid and teen sizes, the dresses went to her knees. Now that it's summertime, information technology's too hot for long-sleeved dresses, and they'll be manner too short by next winter.
I decided that shortening the sleeves would be the perfect solution. Enough small talk. Allow me show you lot how to shorten sleeves the easy mode.
Materials:
- Sewing Machine (I used the Singer Simple Sewing Machine)
- Analogous Thread
- Pins
- Sewing Scissors
- Measuring Record
Directions:
Begin past deciding your new length. One time yous decide how long you lot want the shorter sleeves, add together an extra inch to that length. (The sleeves always end upward shorter than you recall, and yous volition be using the actress length for the hem.) I cut my sleeves as well short, so I didn't accept a total inch to use as the hem.
Cutting off one sleeve.
Before y'all cut the other side, utilise the curt sleeve every bit a pattern. If you just cut the other sleeve off by measuring the aforementioned length you did on the first sleeve, you may or may not terminate up with two sleeves of the same length. Mensurate the inside and outside length of the short sleeve you already cut, and transfer those measurements to the other side. In one case yous're sure yous have the length right, go ahead and cut the other sleeve.
Plow the wearing apparel inside out, fold back about ½ inch of the sleeve edge, and pin information technology downwards.
Your sewing car settings will depend on the type of fabric you are using. For a loosely knit fabric, set up your car similar my settings below. (Use the overcasting stitch or the knit stitch. Come across this postal service to learn which is which.)
Most sewing machines have a snap-in storage compartment in front of the pressure level pes. Remove it so that yous can fit the sleeve over the arm of the motorcar.
Keep your sew together shut to the cut edge of the fabric (not the folded edge). If your sleeve is narrower than the arm of the machine, and so you are stretching the fabric around the arm. That ways that the end of your sleeves will end up slightly wavy. That's what happened to ours, and I think it adds a beautiful edge to the sleeves. If you're with wider sleeves, your border should finish up polish. If your sleeve is narrow, go slowly then that y'all can carefully motility the sleeve around the machine arm every bit you stitch.
Remove the sleeve, trim the threads, and yous're done! Now you've got a fresh summer look, and you didn't break the bank ownership a new dress. You're welcome!
